Building a Timber Frame Home
Building a Timber Frame Home
Timber Frame construction is similar to ‘Post and Beam’ except:
With Timber Frame, lumber that has been cut in a squared dimension (8″ x 8″ or 10″ x 10″ for example) is used instead of the roundness and unique shape of logs.
Timber Frame typically uses classic mortise and tenon joinery secured by wooden dowels. Structural elements (timbers) are typically visible from inside only and the frame is usually ‘skinned’ outside with conventional frame and plywood or state-of-the-art structural insulated panels.
These trusses are built from from 10 x 10 timbers, which were exposed in a high ceiling in the great room. The entire log structure was handcrafted using western red cedar logs, we carefully handcrafted with inner knee braces and supports at the Cascade Handcrafted log yard.
The result is a beautiful timber frame home with exposed 10 x 10 posts that not only aesthetically appealing, but continuously offer the fresh, clean scent of western red cedar.
